Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about attar, perfume, and fragrance — answered clearly.

Basics — Attar vs Perfume

What is the difference between attar and perfume?

Attar (also called itr) is a pure, concentrated oil-based fragrance with no alcohol — traditionally made by distilling flowers, herbs, or resins into a sandalwood oil base. Perfume is a fragrance compound dissolved in alcohol. Attars last longer on skin, feel more skin-friendly, and carry a warmer, more intimate character. Alcohol-based perfumes project more immediately but fade faster.

Can we mix attar and perfume together?

Yes, and it works very well. Apply the attar first on pulse points and let it settle for a minute. Then spray your perfume on top or nearby. The attar acts as a base layer that anchors and extends the perfume, adds depth, and improves longevity. This is called layering and is one of the best ways to create a unique signature scent.

Is attar alcohol-free?

Yes. Traditional attar is 100% alcohol-free. The fragrance is carried in a pure oil base — typically sandalwood oil. This makes it suitable for people who prefer to avoid alcohol for religious, personal, or skin-sensitivity reasons.

Which is longer lasting — attar or perfume?

Attar is generally longer lasting. Because it is oil-based with a high concentration of fragrance materials and no alcohol to evaporate, it can last 6–12 hours or more on skin. Alcohol-based perfumes typically last 4–8 hours depending on concentration (EDP vs EDT).

How to Use & Apply

How do you apply attar correctly?

Dab 2–4 drops directly on pulse points: inner wrist, sides of neck, behind the ears, inner elbows, and behind the knees. Do not rub the application — this breaks down the fragrance molecules. Let the oil sit naturally. Apply on moisturised skin for the best longevity.

Can attar be applied on underarms?

Yes, though with caution. Applying a small amount on clean underarm skin is a traditional practice and can work well. Use sparingly — 1 dab — as the warmth of underarms intensifies the fragrance significantly. Make sure the skin is clean and dry before application to avoid irritation. Avoid applying on irritated or freshly shaved underarm skin.

How much attar should I use per application?

Less is more with attar. Start with 1–3 dabs depending on the strength of the fragrance. Concentrated attars can become overpowering when over-applied. You can always add more later but cannot remove excess. One dab on the wrist and one on the neck is often enough for most situations.

Can attar be applied on clothes?

It can, but be careful. Oil-based attars can leave a small stain on light-coloured fabrics, especially silk or cotton. For clothing, apply on fabric folds or on the inside of collars and cuffs where staining would not be visible. Perfume sprays are generally safer for fabric application.

When is the best time to apply attar?

Right after a shower when skin is clean and slightly moisturised. The natural oils and warmth help the attar bond with your skin and project better. Applying on dry, bare skin on pulse points gives the best longevity throughout the day.

Choosing the Right Fragrance

Which attar is best for summer?

For Indian summer heat, choose light, fresh, aquatic, or citrus-forward attars. These feel clean and cool rather than heavy or cloying. Good summer options include Aqua Serenity (aquatic, fresh), Lemongrass (bright citrus-herbal), and lighter musk blends. Avoid heavy oud and amber profiles in peak summer — they become overwhelming in heat.

Which attar is best for men?

For men, woody, musky, and oud-forward profiles are the most popular. For office and daily use, clean woody-musk profiles like Apex Flow or Golden Sandalwood work well. For evenings and special occasions, richer options like Imperial Oudh, Noir Elixir, or Taj-e-Sultan offer more depth and projection.

Which attar is best for women?

Floral, fruity, and rose-oud profiles are most popular for women. Gardenia Luxe, Rose Oudh, and Princess Oudh are excellent choices. For warmer, spiced femininity, Crimson Elixir and Shanaya Royale offer gorgeous depth. For a soft everyday wear, White Musk or Noir Femme work beautifully.

Which attar is best for office wear?

Office attars should be moderate in projection and inoffensive in shared spaces. Clean musk, fresh aromatic, and soft woody profiles work best. Avoid heavy oud and intense amber for workplace settings. Apex Flow, White Musk, and Golden Sandalwood are reliable, professional choices.

Which attar suits beginners?

Start with a clean, accessible profile rather than an intense oud or complex blend. Good beginner options include White Musk (soft, universal), Aqua Serenity (fresh, light), or Golden Sandalwood (warm, smooth). Discovery sets are ideal — they let you try multiple profiles before committing to a full bottle.

Shelf Life & Storage

Does attar expire?

Pure oil-based attars rarely expire in the way alcohol-based perfumes do. Without alcohol, there is no evaporation and the fragrance molecules are more stable. A good quality attar stored correctly can last 5–10 years or more. In fact, pure sandalwood attars and oud oils improve with age, gaining more depth and smoothness over time.

How should I store attar to make it last longer?

Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity. Keep the bottle tightly sealed when not in use. A drawer, cupboard, or fragrance box is ideal. Avoid storing in bathrooms where heat and steam can degrade the fragrance over time.

Why does my attar smell different after a few months?

This is normal and often desirable. Quality oil-based attars evolve over time as the raw materials continue to integrate and mature. An attar that smells slightly sharper when new often becomes smoother and more rounded after a few months of storage. If the smell has become genuinely unpleasant (rancid, acidic), that may indicate contamination — but this is rare with properly sealed, quality attars.
